On the heels of the team's 100th anniversary celebrations, TSN counts down the top 10 all-time Montreal Canadiens players.
Watching the video, note the rediculous amount of awards these ten players got:
50 Stanley Cup rings combined
13 Vezina Trophies (Goaltender of the year)
4 Art Ross Trophies (League's top scorer in the regular season)
9 Norris Trophies (Defenseman of the year)
9 Hart Trophies (Regular season most valuable player)
6 Conn Smythe Trophies (Playoff most valuable player)
For those that might not follow the NHL, here's a brief description of the "Habs".
The Montreal Canadiens started life in 1909, actually predating the current league by nearly a half-decade. Over the following
century, the Montreal Canadiens became a hockey powerhouse of epic proportions. In 99 seasons, they won an almost obscene
24 championships.
In a competitive league like the NHL, Montreal washed the opposition clean on two notable occasions: the 1950s when most of the team
eventually became hall-of-famers, and in the 1970s.. when they had a similar scenario. In 1976-77 they went an entire 80-game season
with just 8 losses, capturing 9 of the 14 NHL team and player awards that year.
Also, to put things in perspective, the Toronto Maple Leafs sit a distant second on the list of most Stanley Cups with 13.. spread out over 91 years.
But Henri Richard was able to win the Stanley Cup 11 times playing with Montreal in his 20-year career.
Mathematically they are the most successful major sports team of all time in North America, regardless of the sport. Mathematically best in the
world could quite possibly be true as well.
